RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
