Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
