Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
